7/24

7 pounds in 24 hours. That's how much weight I managed to lose due to some bad meat I ate at the cafeteria on Tuesday afternoon. Not fun at all - especially given that I am trying to wrap things up at work and have endless lists of things I hoped to accomplish. Losing weight and sleeping for 24 hours straight were not on that list.

On a happier note, my parents were here for a long weekend this last weekend. We had a great time - they got to see the mountains, the beach and the clinic....some of the best of Haiti.

On an even happier note, today is my last day in the clinic for at least 2 months! I leave Haiti tomorrow afternoon and will now call New York state home once again. Even better is that I don't have to say a real goodbye to the people I love in Haiti. I know I'll be back for a week or so in October and likely a few more times over the next academic year. For now it's just "a la pwochenn" - until next time.

man in the mirror

In the hours after MJ's death some new graffiti art sprung up on a wall along our morning commute route. There is lots of impressive (and not so impressive) graffiti all around the city - most of the good stuff appears to belong to 1 or 2 artists and has a strong social/political message.

hiv in haiti - a success story

The local Associated Press reporter recently released this story highlighting the success of early efforts to control the spread and treat HIV in Haiti. Haitian doctors were the first to recognize and officially report cases of HIV outside of the US and Europe. I have the privilege of working with / for several of the people quoted in the story.
